Jake's Saloon was one of the very first places Tammy Scott & I visited when I moved to New York in early 2016. She told me she lived just two blocks away, had passed it daily, had even seen the sign posted out front that read BEST BURGER IN NEW YORK, but had never stopped in there. Well, one day, after proclaiming my love for all things "burger", not to mention having a pure romance with Guinness beer, we decided to go in. We were immediately hit with the feeling of "Home." It was crazy, but this was exactly the "Neighborhood Bar" we had always looked for. Oh, it gets better. Within minutes of bellying up to the bar, we were met by Jimmy and Katherine, two of the nicest (and authentically Irish) bartenders you'll ever meet. They would soon become like family, as they greeted us by name immediately upon our arrival, asking if we'd like "our usual" food and/or beverage. Then, it got one better. Shortly thereafter--I believe it was within the next time we arrived, we were lucky enough to meet JIMMY Cahill, the owner of the bar. He immediately met us, calling us by name, buying us a drink and sitting down to chat for what felt like the rest of the night. It was one of the best nights of our lives here in New York. These folks are real. The food is fantastic. The drinks are just what you'd expect. And the ambiance is truly "neighborhood." And just in case you think Tammy and I believe it's utopia, let us say, if there was ONE thing (maybe TWO) that could make the place "perfect" it would be (1) update your TV screens, as they've seen better days (about 5 years ago), and (2) get the City of New York to remove the F'n scaffolding so that sitting outside on a "perfect Autumn day" (which is about right now), would be absolute Bliss. All in all, we are happy to call this place HOME...for the remaining time we have here in New York. And the next time we show up, of course, we'll order pretty much the exact same thing: A Guinness for me, a vodka/soda for Tammy, and we'll split a med/rare burger with cheddar, crispy bacon & grilled onions, served alongside an extra serving of the best fries in town (me: mayonnaise/her: ketchup). We love you, Jimmy, Jimmy-2 and Katherine.
